UFC 238 took place on Saturday, June 8 at United Center and aired live nationally on Pay-Per-View exclusively through ESPN+. The event drew an announced attendance of 16,083 fans for a live gate of $2,034,387.49. UFC officials announced the figures after the event.
In the main event, Cejudo made history by becoming the fourth fighter under the UFC banner to win a second title. He won the vacant bantamweight title with a third-round TKO against Marlon Moraes.
Shevchenko was able to defend her women’s flyweight title for the first time with a devastating head-kick knockout against Jessica Eye in just 26 seconds into the second round.
Ferguson took on Cerrone and as expected they put on a “Fight of the Night” performance but for only two rounds. During the break in between the second and third round, Cerrone blew his nose and blew up a hematoma under his right eye. Doctors took a hard look at his eye and they decided it was too hard for him to see. The fight was stopped and Ferguson won by TKO.
After the event, UFC officials announced the bonus winners. Fight of the Night was given to Tony Ferguson vs. Donald Cerrone. Performance of the Night was given to Henry Cejudo and Valentina Shevchenko. Each fighter took home an extra $50k.
Fighters took home their Reebok Sponsorship Pay totaling $304,500. Coming in first place was Henry Cejudo and Valentina Shevchenko taking home $40,000. In second place was Marlon Moraes and Jessica Eye taking home $30,000.
The program tier are as follows: Fighters with 1-3 bouts receive $3,500 per appearance; 4-10 bouts get $5,000; 11-15 bouts earn $10,000; 16-20 bouts pocket $15,000; and 21 bouts and more get $20,000. Additionally, champions earn $40,000 while title challengers get $30,000. Also, UFC fighters will receive in perpetuity royalty payments amounting to 20-30 percent of any UFC merchandise sold that bears their likeness, according to officials.
