UFC alum Cain Velasquez arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following Bay Area shooting

Cain Velasquez, a former two-time undisputed UFC heavyweight champion and 15 fight veteran under the promotion’s banner, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following an alleged shooting in the Bay Area of California at 3:14 p.m. local time on Monday.
Velasquez, who is currently being held without bail, was booked into the Santa Clara Department of Corrections facility, was allegedly involved in an incident where another man was shot “at least once” in Morgan Hill, California. The other male involved in the incident was transported to a local medical facility for treatment, where his condition has been described as “non-life-threatening”.
TMZ initially reported that Velasquez, a native of Salinas, California had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in relation to the incident, which is currently under investigation by the San Jose Police Department.
The department’s official Twitter media relations profile confirmed Velasquez’s arrest in a tweet, however, did not specify if the 39-year-old had been formally charged with attempted murder.
“Cain Velasquez was the suspect arrested yesterday in connection with this incident,” A tweet from the San Jose Police Media Relations Twitter account read. “He was booked into Santa Clara County main jail for attempted murder. The motive and circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation at this time.”
A former two-time undisputed heavyweight champion under the UFC’s banner, Velasquez, who boasts a 15-2 professional record, last competed professionally back in February 2019, suffering a first round knockout loss to current division titleholder, Francis Ngannou.
