Stockholm, Sweden’s Ericsson Globe Arena was the home to the UFC event headlined by Gunnar Nelson vs. Rick Story.
The main event is where we start our recap. Most eyes on this fight were there for Gunnar Nelson, while most felt Rick Story was there to pad the undefeated Nelson’s resume with a name. Luckily for Story he never saw those types of remarks. He put forth a strong effort against Nelson keeping his range and mixing up his strikes and kept Nelson off-balance, even landing a knockdown in the 4th. The fight did make me wonder if Gunnar Nelson should move down a weight class to 155. He’s by no means a large welterweight, he hardly cuts any weight at all, it may be a smart move for him.
Winner: Rick Story split decision
The co-main event featured Max Halloway vs. Akira Corassani in the featherweight division. A fight that was shaping up to be a good striking battle ended after 2 knockdowns led to a TKO victory by Max Halloway. Corassani was game and tried holding on after he was dropped for the first time. But unfortunately for him Halloway landed a big right hand that put him down and the follow-up ground and pound ended his night.
Winner: Max Halloway TKO 3:11 R1
The light heavyweight battle between Jan Blachowicz and Ilir Latifi was over even quicker. A nasty lead body kick by Blachowicz visibly shook Latifi, a nice left and right combination put Illir down and some follow up strikes put a stop to things.
Winner: Jan Blachowicz TKO 1:58 R1
Featherweights opened up the main card, as hometown boy Niklas Backstrom faces off with England’s Mike Wilkinson. Backstrom came out strong, throwing some nice leg kicks, a wheel kick and some fine front kicks at one point seemed to stun the seemingly outgunned Wilkinson. Then one strike changed all that. After eating yet another right front kick to the face, Wilkinson uncorked a massive right hand dropping Backstrom in a heap. The needless ground strikes were the contest’s end.
Winner: Wilkinson KO 1:19 R1
