UFC Hall of Fame History:
The official establishment of the UFC Hall of Fame took place on November 21, 2003, during UFC 45, with its headquarters situated in Las Vegas. The inaugural inductees were none other than the legendary competitors Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock, who were instrumental in shaping the early days of the UFC.
In 2015, the UFC made a significant announcement regarding the revitalization of its Hall of Fame. The Hall underwent a transformation, dividing into four distinct categories or wings. Henceforth, each July, during the UFC’s annual International Fight Week in Las Vegas, a new class of legends would be honored at a grand ceremony.
The four wings of the UFC Hall of Fame are as follows:
- Modern Wing: This wing celebrates champions who made their professional debuts after the implementation of the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts, which came into effect on November 28, 2000, starting from UFC 28.
- Pioneers Wing: Commemorating the original innovators of MMA, this wing recognizes those who turned professional prior to the establishment of the Unified Rules.
- Fight Wing: This wing pays tribute to the greatest and most historically significant bouts, honoring the most memorable fights in MMA history.
- Contributors Wing: Recognizing outstanding contributions made outside of active competition, this wing acknowledges individuals who have made a significant impact on the sport beyond their in-ring performances.
Additionally, there is the Forrest Griffin Community Award, which highlights a UFC athlete’s philanthropic and volunteer work, as well as their positive influence on the community.
The realization of the new Hall of Fame structure was a result of the efforts of former UFC executive Anthony Evans, who persistently proposed the four-wing concept to UFC President Dana White. Finally, in 2015, White granted permission for the transformation.
The UFC Hall of Fame is located within the UFC Performance Institute, with its distinguished members honored on the walls of the first and second-floor staircase, serving as a lasting testament to their achievements.
