The popularity of a sport can rise and wane based on the characters and story lines that it produces, as well as certain athletes who can make the impossible possible.
In Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao boxing had two such figures, both who came from lowly beginnings to become global megastars. However, with Mayweather long retired and Pacquiao finally succumbing to age against Yordenis Ugás, the Sweet Science is in desperate need of a new superstar. Here we look at who that man or woman might be.
With Pac-Man and Money way beyond their prime, it is time for a new breed of fighter to step forward and take the limelight
The Forgotten Pound for Pound Kings
Boxing is a never-ending story of men who were too talented for their own good, with opponents running scared and promoters often losing patience with incredible fighters who they just couldn’t find a way to market correctly, even if betting tipsters and odds makers view them as the best in the business.
Some names that come to mind at the moment include the undisputed Light-Welterweight champion Josh Taylor and 3-weight world champion Terence Crawford, both of whom are some of the first names on any boxing betting slip, when fans are looking for sure-fire picks to use their sports free bets on. Who knows, perhaps one of these incredibly skilled pugilists can take a chance and face each other, in order for one of them to establish themselves as the world’s best boxer.

Perhaps a woman could do something akin to Rose Namajunas and take over the world of boxing
Canelo is Boxing’s New Cash Cow
There is no doubt that, aside from the heavyweights, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is now boxing’s biggest draw. He has risen to star status in his native Mexico and is also well known in the US, but he arguably still needs a defining fight to rise to the levels of fame that Mayweather and Pacquiao enjoyed in their pomp. It is unclear if him fighting on the new DAZN streaming platform is helping his overall global reach.
The Big Men Look to Steal the Show
Not since Muhammad Ali has a heavyweight boxer been able to lay claim to being the biggest draw on the planet, but there are now some men in the top weight division who could be about to achieve the feat.
When Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua eventually meet it is thought that the winner could transcend the sport and rule the world for years to come, but first they have to put their contractual differences aside and commit to putting pen to paper. Or perhaps Ali’s legacy will be picked up by Nico Ali Walsh and the big men will be left wishing they had faced each other sooner.
