Why Usman vs. Covington is the spotlight of UFC 245

UFC 245 takes place on December 14th 2019 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It is the last closeout PPV event of the year headlined by UFC welterweight Champion Kamaru “The Nigerian Nightmare” Usman vs. former Interim Champion Colby “Chaos” Covington.

In the co-main event we have UFC Featherweight Champion Max “Blessed” Holloway vs Alexander “The Great” Volkanovski.

But that’s not it..

It also has UFC Women’s Bantamweight AND Featherweight Champion Amanda “The Lioness” Nunes vs. Former Featherweight Champion Germaine “The Iron Lady” De Randamie

That’s right. 3 Title Fights. One Card.

One can argue that each of these matchups deserve their own headliner on separate cards, but we the fans are lucky enough to witness the thrill that these match-ups will bring on Saturday Night.

The question is… Why?

Why does a champion in Kamaru Usman who is defending his title for the FIRST time get to headline above the greatest Featherweight of all time Max Holloway and the greatest woman MMA fighter of all time Amanda Nunes?

One word. Rivalry.

We’ve seen them before, Ortiz vs. Lidell, St-Pierre vs. Penn, Rampage vs. Evans, the list goes on and on.

We’ve seen the bad blood, the former teammates, greatness vs. greatness.

But what makes this one so special?

This one goes back to the infamous rivalry between not only gyms, but the owners of where these gentlemen put in the blood, sweat, and tears.

It’s a story that falls perfectly into place since we saw the infamous Dan Lambert and the late Glenn Robinson only stir the pot that made the rivalry between American Top Team and the now dismantled Blackzillians.

Colby’s brash character that he is portraying might’ve hurt a few relationships within American Top Team, but it’s the fighter he is that the gym helped create.

A loud personality and a 7-fight win streak was only a matter of time before Colby got a title shot.

What better way to fight for the title than to fight the product of the rival gym?

Colby’s war of words, his alter-ego, carrying around his belt and overwhelming his opponents with wrestling and a volume of strikes matches him up with the Champion, Kamaru Usman who only to add fuel to the fire shares a very similar record with the Challenger but came up in much more quiet way and eventually passed up Covington for his title shot that obviously he took advantage of

BOTH fighters have fought the likes of Rafael Dos Anjos, Demian Maia, Jose Caceres (Colby won and Kamaru lost, and Warley Alves (Kamaru won and Colby lost)

And coincidentally BOTH share a dominant performance against former champs with Usman dominating and winning the title against Woodley and Covington dominating Lawlor for his title shot.

The story has the ingredients to become a recipe of violence, and that’s why this fight gets the spotlight. That’s why the MMA Gods have blessed us with fireworks from the first fight of the main card to the last.

Who you got?
