Former two-time UFC featherweight champion José Aldo appears to be testing a cut to 135 pounds, in an attempt to meet with division best Henry Cejudo. Taking to Instagram, Combate writer Ana Hissa posted a picture of Aldo in seemingly high spirits, looking extremely cut ahead of a possible drop in weight class.
The Manaus favorite suffered a title hampering loss to Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 237 in May, bringing a end to a two-fight win streak which included knockouts of both Jeremy Stephens, and compatriot Renato Moicano. Muay Thai ace Aldo, was notoriously linked with a move to lightweight during his time as featherweight best, in a meeting with then 155 pound king Anthony Pettis, with a bout failing to materialize.
UFC president Dana White, has recently voiced his concerns regarding Aldo’s intentions to move to bantamweight, citing the harsh weight-cuts the Brazilian endured during his prime at featherweight as a possible roadblock. “(José) Aldo sent me a text telling me he really wants to do this so we really haven’t talked about it. But there is no way that kid can make 135 pounds. No way. You remember when he was the champ how hard it was for him to make 145 pounds and he’s not getting any younger. So I haven’t even taken that seriously. Love (José) Aldo, I want to do what he wants to do but I don’t think I want to see him try to cut to 135 (pounds). I don’t think that’s going to be good for him.”
Aldo, who remained undefeated as a professional for just over eleven years until he he dropped his featherweight title to Conor McGregor in 2015, regained the crown with a interim title rematch win over Frankie Edgar, and was later promoted to undisputed champion. Hawaii pace-setter Max Holloway stopped Aldo’s reign once more and then successfully lodged a title defense against the Manaus native, and it now seems the decorated striker has his sights set on two-weight world champion Henry Cejudo, with the two trading barbs in August, ahead of a possible title face off in the future.
