Bellator 224 Reults – Julia Budd defends featherweight Title & The best of the rest

As the Dust settles on Bellator 224 from the WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma we take a look at the results and what next.

The main event saw current women’s featherweight champion Julia Budd taking on challenger Olga Rubin. From the outset Budd attacked the body of Rubin, ultimately finishing her just 2:14 of the opening round. This is the 3rd time Julia Budd has defended the title & now rides an 11 fight win streak. Budd was very vocal on who she wants next, setting her sights on both Leslie Smith & RIZIN FF heavyweight Gabi Garcia. Giving that Budd is the only person to hold the 145 featherweight title & Bellators love for cross-promotion. The Gabi Garcia fight could actually happen.

In the co-main event, Rafael Carvalho used his superior grappling to control opponent Chidi Njokuani to take his first win in three fights. Other than the first round this was not the most exciting fight for the natural fan, although the takedown from Carvalho in the third round is sure to be time & time again.

Now, 9-0 Juliana Velasquez took only two rounds to finish Kristina Williams. Velasquez who many thought may use her Jodo skills in this stood and threw leather early & hard in this fight.  Surely gets the shot for Ilima-Lei Macfarlane flyweight title?

Ed Ruth three-time NCAA Division 1 national champion got back to winning way after taking a TKO win over Kiichi Kunimoto in round 2 of last night card. Ruth who many thought would use his high-level wrestling to secure the win, but couldn’t be further from the truth. Ruth & Kunimoto were fighting like they were in a kickboxing fight. With Kunimoto landing early kicks & Ruth taking it to him with his hands. That was until Kunimoto shot for a takedown. Kunimoto was unable to finish allowing Ruth to take full mont and rain blows till the Reff stepped in to stop the fight.

Leslie Smith def. Sinead Kavanagh by majority decision (28-28, 29-28, 29-28) in what many are calling the wrong decision. All three round was much the same with Kavanagh using here boxing to land counters off the attacks of Smith. Smith did much of the same but found it hard to get away from Kavanagh in the final round.

Kiefer Crosbie lost via disqualification following an illegal knee to his downed opponent Mike Jackson. Watching the fight it was clear that 2 or 3 more punches that the ref was going to stop the fight in favor of Crosbie who was dominating with elbows & punches against the cage. When Jackson dropped to his knees this is where the knee landed, causing Jason Herzog to step in and correctly call the fight a DQ with Jackson in no state to continue. Crosbie is still one of the best prospects to come from Ireland in years & I don’t feel like this will affect him moving forward.
