A potential light heavyweight championship-eliminator is almost finalized for the UFC’s February visit to Rio Rancho, New Mexico, as surging contender, Corey ‘Overtime’ Anderson is in line to meet with former KSW best, Poland’s Jan Blachowicz.
The two 205-pound rivals have been vying for a title challenge against division best Jon Jones for the last year, and must now battle it out to determine the number one contender while Jones meets the undefeated, Dominick Reyes in the main event of UFC 247 the same month. The news of the pairing was initially reported by ESPN staff writer, Brett Okamoto.
Wrestling practitioner Anderson, has managed four wins from his last four Octagon appearances, and added popular rising contender Johnny Walker to his win column at UFC 244 at the beginning of last month, as he scored an opening round knockout. The Illinois native has also picked up victories over Patrick Cummins, former light heavyweight title challenger, Glover Teixeira, and upcoming heavyweight debutante, Ilir Latifi. The Ultimate Fighter season 19 victor may be a single victory away from sealing his premier championship tilt in the promotion.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Jan Blachowicz recently added to his win streak at UFC Fight Night Sao Paulo, in a less than memorable meeting with former Strikeforce middleweight champion, Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza. Against former UFC 185-pound best, Luke Rockhold at UFC 239 earlier this summer, Blachowicz stopped the Californian in the second round as he rebounded from his loss to Thiago ‘Marreta’ Santos. Before the defeat to Santos in Czech Republic, Blachowicz had lodged a four fight unbeaten run at light heavyweight.
UFC Fight Night Rio Rancho takes place from the Santa Ana Star Centre on February 15th. In a flyweight pairing, former division title chaser, Ray Borg returns as he meets with Rogerio Bontarin. In another flyweight clash, Montana De La Rosa takes on Mara Romero Borella.
