Off the back of a spectacular UFC debut knockout victory over Jordan Williams on Saturday at Madison Square Garden, 23-year-old Irish upstart, Ian ‘The Future’ Garry has claimed a future welterweight title fight including himself and the fellow undefeated, Khamzat ‘Borz’ Chimaev is firmly on the horizon for both of them.

Improving his undefeated record to 8-0 on Saturday night as the featured preliminary bout of UFC 268, Garry managed to stop the aforenoted, Williams with just a single second remaining in the opening round, courtesy of a well-timed and placed counter right hand, as well as a couple follow up strikes.

The victory marked former Cage Warriors welterweight champion, Garry’s first in the UFC since his move from the Graham Boylan-led organization back in June, and he even received the stamp and seal of approval from fellow Dubliner, former two-weight champion, ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor — who praised his shot selection and knockout, as well as maintaining he would be soon joining the forces of Garry for a second iteration of an Irish takeover of the organization.

Despite scoring an opening round knockout victory over Williams, it wasn’t, however, all plain sailing for Garry throughout the opening exchanges as the former managed to get the better of him as he attempted to find his range and timing.

Post-fight, Garry spoke with assembled media where he addressed his performance, claiming that it was not his cleanest, but nonetheless, he was happy to go out and score an opening round knockout as planned.

Tonight, was it the cleanest performance? No, but did I do what I said I was going to do? Yes,” Ian Garry said. “So, that’s all that matters. I’m going to keep doing that and people are always gonna say, ‘Oh, I can beat this guy’, so do it. Let’s see it. Give me the guy who’s going to do it.

Laying out a potential future scenario in which he competes for UFC welterweight spoils, Garry, now under the tutelage of Sanford MMA in Deerfield Beach, Florida — predicted he would be fighting the undefeated, Chimaev in the future for gold.

The only two people that I can think are gonna do it right now are Khamzat [Chimaev] and Kamaru [Usman], because they’re the two guys who are the sh*t at the moment,” Ian Garry said. “Kamaru’s the champ, Khamzat is going to be the champ, then it’s going to be me and Khamzat fighting for that belt in a couple of years. Potentially for both belts, as he fights at middleweight too.

Prior to his UFC debut on Saturday, the Portmarnock native ascended through the ranks at Cage Warriors alongside Chris Fields, Cathal Pendred, and Tom King at Team KF Martial Arts in Swords — eventually minting himself as the undisputed welterweight champion in a June unanimous decision victory over now-Bellator contender, Jack Grant.
