MMA or “mixed martial arts” is a sport that requires every fighter to be physically and mentally healthy. To perform well in this sport, you should be able to be at your prime on the day of the fight. Your body must be strong enough to take the toll of massive jabs and punches and then get back to your opponent with even greater strength.
Any MMA veteran would tell you that the only way you can gain that much strength is by training hard under the supervision of an experienced coach. However, for the training sessions to show the desired results, you must eat the right kind of food. Read on to know about the ideal eating pattern for MMA champions.
Pre and Post Workout Nutrition
The meal you take before you work out should contain enough carbohydrates. As the training session would result in a significant loss of energy, you must consume enough carbs to boost your energy levels. A perfect pre-workout meal should consist of 2 to 4 eggs, fruits, and oatmeal.
Training sessions of MMA fighters usually last for 60 to 90 minutes. The fighters cannot eat anything when the session is underway. Ideally, you must take the last heavy meal before the workout four hours before the toil begins.
The heavy meal should be followed by a light one around 90 minutes before the training begins. According to nutritionists, this meal should provide fighters with lots of nitrates. You can have a glassful of pomegranate or beetroot juice, both of which have high nitrate content. They are powerful vasodilators, and thus are perfect as pre-workout supplements.
Once your workout is over, you should not eat or drink anything right away. If you had the pre-workout meals on time, you shouldn’t feel too hungry or dehydrated after the training session. You must wait for around 30 minutes before you eat your first post-workout meal. This meal shouldn’t include anything heavy. Ideally, you should have something like a glassful of tart cherry juice or whey protein shake. These are options that will calm your nerves and allow you to relax.
Cherry boasts powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Thus, the consumption of cherry juice will help you to recover quickly after the training. You can also use your CBD pen to vape some cannabidiol to allow your muscles to heal even faster.
The next meal should be much heavier. It should contain plenty of fat. Here, we would like to mention that fats play a crucial role to keep the MMA fighters strong and healthy. Contrary to the popular belief, fat helps to have stronger joints and enables quick recovery. So, the next meal after the training session must consist of a good amount of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats.
An ideal post-workout meal must contain 20-30% fat, 20% protein, and 50-60% carbs. You should consume avocado, salmon, extra virgin olive oil, nuts, etc. to ensure your meal consists of enough healthy fats.
To ensure you have the energy to complete your daily chores, you can follow the meal up with some CBD distillate.
A Perfect Supper
Your supper should be primarily about proteins. This will allow your muscles to recover faster. According to experts, MMA fighters must alternate the protein sources. Some of the options they can choose from include shrimp, salmon, red meat (you can eat it around twice every week), roasted chicken, etc. Consume these proteins with a plateful of green, leafy veggies like broccoli, spinach, kale, etc.
As eating right holds the key to your success as an MMA fighter, you must consult a qualified dietician when you start your journey in this field. If you get the right kind of nutrition from the very beginning, you will be able to prepare your body and mind for the fights more easily.
