The international MMA community continues to show its support for His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa on the occasion of his appointment as the president of the Bahrain Olympic Committee. After fighters and influencers from the sport sent their congratulations, it was time for IMMAF president Kerrith Brown and Brave 23 top Flyweight Jose “Shorty” Torres to praise Sheikh Khalid’s appointment and talk about his vision and leadership for the sport.
Torres has been one of the biggest enthusiasts of His Highness’ work in mixed martial arts. Sheikh Khalid has built the KHK MMA team and has also founded Brave Combat Federation, the fastest-growing promotion on the planet. “Shorty” represented KHK MMA early in his professional career, capturing titles in other promotions before officially joining Brave at the end of last year. The American star is set for his promotional debut next Friday, on Brave 23: Pride and Honor, but left a message talking of his excitement for Sheikh Khalid’s new position.
“I’m at the airport heading to Amman, Jordan, for Brave 23 but I wanted to give a huge shoutout to Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa for now being elected the president of the Bahrain Olympic Committee. That’s amazing. I’ve seen what you’ve been able to do with Brave, KHK MMA, KHK Heroes, and so many other things… You’re more than deserving for this job. You’re trying to showcase the sport of MMA and highlighting all sports in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and show that the Kingdom is a force to be reckoned with in the athletic field. See you soon!”.
Before rising in the professional ranks, Torres was first spotted at the IMMAF world amateur championships, where he won two gold medals. For the last three years, Sheikh Khalid has committed to the development of the sport also at amateur level by helping to bring the world championships to Bahrain and increasing its popularity. Mr. Kerrith Brown, president of the International MMA Federation, who has a close relationship with His Highness, was also quick to congratulate him on his momentous appointment.
“Congratulations to His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa as the new president of the Bahrain Olympic Committee. This is fantastic news for MMA: His Highness has been a passionate patron and supporter of the sport, both at national and community level and also at an international level, being the driving force behind Bahrain’s hosting of the IMMAF -WMMA World Championships for three years. He has been closely involved with the Bahraini national amateur MMA team, which has travelled to participate in international competitions with a high success rate. I couldn’t be happier for the Prince, who is also himself a committed sports participant. And I am proud on behalf of MMA, to see such an advocate attain this position in a country well reputed as a world-class platform for international sports”, commented Brown.
