Taking main event honours in certainly one of the most entertaining middleweight matchups in recent memory, Swedish born grappler, Jack ‘The Joker’ Hermansson has confirmed he suffered a broken eye socket and toe in his incredible five-round back-and-forth with Marvin ‘The Italian Dream’ Vettori last night.
Dropping his second defeat in three, Hermansson who was originally scheduled to meet with former welterweight title challenger, Darren Till and then the streaking, Kevin Holland — eventually met with Vettori on short-notice at last night’s UFC Apex facility showcase.
Dealing with some early adversity, Hermansson suffered quite a heavy knockdown midway through the opening-frame, suffering some notable swelling around his left eye to boot.
Surviving the knockdown and subsequent barrage on the bottom, Hermansson saw some real success midway through the fight, as Vettori seemed to slow down in both outputs, and potency from his strikes.
Requiring transportation after his unanimous decision defeat to the Trento native, Hermansson took to his official Instagram account where he confirmed he had suffered both a broken toe and an eye socket, before thanking fans for their support.
“Broken toe and broken eye socket but not a broken spirit. The goal remains the same. Thank you for your support. #thejokerdominates“
Hermansson, a former Cage Warriors titleholder is now forced on a path to a return to the win column again, following his winning return at UFC Fight Island 2 in July, where he picked up a quickfire heel-hook submission win over one-time interim middleweight title challenger, Kelvin Gastelum.
For Vettori, who entered last night’s headliner as the #12 ranked 185-pound contender, he can expect his name jotted amongst the division’s top-five come the release of the official rankings next week.
With sights set on a potential title-eliminator next, the 27-year-old Italian called for an intriguing pairing with fellow heavy hitter and recent middleweight title challenger, Paulo ‘The Eraser’ Costa.
