Will it prove second-time lucky for the much-anticipated Octagon debut of former Cage Warriors lightweight titleholder, Jai ‘The Black Country Banger’ Herbert? The highly-touted prospect was initially scheduled to make his first walk under the UFC banner in March at UFC Fight Night London – until the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic shelved pairings with fellow U.K. standout, Marc Diakiese.
On July 25th. from Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE – Herbert is slated to meet with perennial division contender, Francisco Trinaldo in a lightweight tilt.
Herbert is riding a six-fight undefeated run, with his final win under the Cage Warriors banner coming opposite Chris Carrizosa in a first-round knockout. In the midst of a career resurgence, veteran contender, Trinaldo added John Makdessi to his win column at UFC Fight Night Brasília in March. News of the 155-pound pairing was initially reported by Combate’s, Marcelo Barone.
With a 10-1 professional record, 32-year-old division upstart, Herbert faces quite the stern test for his first trek under the UFC’s scrutiny. The Team Renegade BJJ mainstay has managed an incredible nine stoppages from his ten career wins – displaying eye-catching submission and striking chaps. Three of Herbert’s most recent four wins have all concluded via first-round knockout.
Piauí native, Trinaldo will make his staggering twenty-second Octagon appearance, following an initial middleweight bow back at UFC 147 eight years prior. Forever occupying the lightweight top fifteen – the 41-year-old embarked on an incredible seven-fight undefeated streak following a May 2014 loss to Michael Chiesa.
Following a unanimous decision loss to Alexander ‘The Great’ Hernandez at UFC Fight Night San Antonio last July – the well-rounded finisher scored unanimous judgings of his own against both Bobby Green, and the aforementioned, Makdessi.
