Jon “Bones” Jones (23-1 MMA, 17-1 UFC) is slated to defend his belt against Anthony “Lionheart” Smith (31-13 MMA, 7-3 UFC) at UFC 235.
UFC President Dana White stated late Saturday night to TMZ that the promotion is planning to book the light heavyweight title fight for March 2, 2019 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Jones still needs to appear before the NSAC to discuss the drug-test finding that made the last-minute change to move UFC 232 from Nevada to California.
Sources close to FightBook MMA at JacksonWink stated:
“UFC wants him to fight again in March. We told him that’s when Diego and Holly are fighting. He agreed it would probably be a distraction for them if he’s training simultaneously so he will probably fight in April next.”
Jones took on Gustafsson at UFC 232. He was able to defeat him in the third round to win the undisputed UFC light heavyweight title for the third time.
Smith is now on a three-fight win streak since moving up to the 205 pound division with wins over Rashad Evans, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Volkan Oezdemir.
