Business is beginning to pick up for UFC 239
Well the recent rumblings of a possible Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic clash for UFC 239, were just that, rumblings. The Light Heavyweight champion will now turn his attention to top contender Thiago Santos in the July headliner, who looks to siege the throne, while Brazil’s Amanda Nunes will defend her Bantamweight crown against former world champion Holly Holm in the event’s co-main slot.
Flirting with the idea of a leap to Heavyweight to face former division king Stipe Miocic on Wednesday evening, it now seems that meeting is dead and buried for the time being as the promotion book Santos into his premier title tilt. Jones defended the 205lbs crown back at UFC 235 against the game Anthony Smith in a comfortable unanimous decision, while Brazil’s ‘Marreta’ stopped former KSW best Jan Blachowicz in the third round of their UFC Fight Night Prague headliner to earn a shot at Bones’ belt.
Santos’ compatriot Amanda Nunes also lands on the International Fight Week card, as she defends her Bantamweight championship against Jackson-Wink MMA veteran Holly Holm. ‘The Lioness’ became the premier female to hold multiple titles simultaneously in the organisation with a breath taking first round finish of consensus best Cris Cyborg last year, while Ronda Rousey slayer Holm, got back to winning ways with a decision victory over former Invicta FC champ Megan Anderson, displaying some eye catching grappling to score the victory on the judge’s scorecards.
UFC 239 takes place from the T-Mobile Arena on July 6th. with a Light Heavyweight meeting of Jan Blachowicz and former UFC and Strikeforce Middleweight champion Luke Rockhold also signed sealed and delivered for International Fight Week.
