Top Michigan fighter Kenny “The Boss” Cross takes on Atlanta beast Robert Hale for the Lights Out lightweight championship in the main event of Lights Out 7 on Saturday in Grand Rapids, Mich., LIVE on FITE. Before that, he spoke with FightBook MMA.
How was training camp for this fight, now that the hay is in the barn and there’s basically just one thing left to do — fight?
Camp was great. It was hard, but we made it through it without any injuries. I’ve gone through so many camps in succession, it’s just second nature to be in there every day, always grinding. Camp was smooth, and the machine is oiled up and ready to go Saturday.
How will it feel to get back in the cage?
I’m very excited. I’ve grown since my last fight and, fighting Robert Hale, it ensures a nice stand-up battle for the fans — something I haven’t been able to do in my career so far. But, with that being said, I can take the fight to the ground and finish the fight there.
Why do you think your opponent has been talking so much, like saying he guarantees a first-round KO over you?
He’s very confident! I was in Tennessee a while, I got to know a lot of athletes, and they were generally very confident in themselves. In practice, I’d always come out on top, but I started to see that people could talk themselves into believing their own hype. They don’t know what they’re in for. I’ll give him kudos on his confidence, though (laughs).
What’s the most likely outcome for this fight?
I would say I’m gonna knock him out in the first … You know, I’ve just got a lot of different ways to take him out and so many different techniques to utilize. It’s definitely gonna be a highlight-reel finish.
