Kris Vereen didn’t have big dreams when he began his MMA journey.
The former hard-hitting, ballhawk defensive back, after all, was still pursuing a career in professional football. MMA training, the Oklahoma native says, was just a fun way to test his impressive athletic ability.
“I didn’t even want to fight at first, to be honest,” Vereen says with a laugh on the eve of his fifth professional bout against Rico Cato at Xtreme Fighting Championships’ YoungGuns 1 on March 27 in Shawnee, OK.
After an impressive amateur career, “The Problem” made his pro debut in 2019. Since then he’s undefeated in four, and more eager than ever to prove himself as a legitimate contender in the XFC’s Hexagon.
“With this fight, I want to prove that I belong at the next level, in the big show,” Vereen says after a recent training session, adding, “I’m blessed, but I’m certainly not content by any means. I’m just getting started.”
