Musaev out, ‘Golden Boy’ steps in to challenge Gamrot for Lightweight Title

Earlier today it was announced that Shamil Musaev was forced to withdraw from his main event title fight against Mateusz Gamrot. Marian Ziolkowski, who was scheduled to face Maciej Kazieczko at KSW 54, will now step up to challenge Gamrot for the KSW lightweight title.

Due to a knee injury sustained in training, Shamil Musaev has been forced to withdraw from the KSW 54 main event. Now Marian ‘Golden Boy’ Ziolkowski (21-7-1) will step up and challenge Mateusz Gamrot (16-0) for the KSW lightweight title this Saturday, August 29 live on

Ziolkowski was already scheduled to fight on KSW 54 against Maciej Kazieczko (6-1), however, upon hearing the news of Musaev’s injury, he did not hesitate in stepping into the main event and finally getting his opportunity for the KSW gold. The 30-year-old comes into this bout off the back of two impressive decision wins shutting out former challenger Grzegrz Szulakowski and top KSW lightweight Gracjan Szadzinski, respectively.

Overall Ziolkowski has a finishing ratio of 81% with five TKO/KOs on his résumé but it is his twelve career wins by submission which has made him one of Poland’s most dangerous grapplers in MMA.

Mateusz Gamrot is now forced, on less than a weeks notice, to adapt his gameplan in order face this new challenge. The 29-year-old, who is also the KSW featherweight champion, has defended the lightweight title four times and has career wins over the likes of Norman Parke, Kleber Koike Erbst, Marif Piraev, Mansour Barnaoui, and Andre Winner. Gamrot is widely regarded as one of the best lightweights in the world.

Speaking on the replacement fight, KSW CEO Martin Lewandowski had the following to say:

“Unfortunately in MMA injuries happen all the time. We tried our best to salvage the main event and we were trying to bring Shamil Musaev to Poland early in order to see specialists but his injury was too severe to recover in time for fight night. The show must go on though and we have an excellent replacement in Marian Ziolkowski, who was all too happy for this opportunity to face Mateusz Gamrot. The fact he has had a full fight camp and knowing about his ability in the cage I am expecting a great main event at KSW 54.”
