Recent UFC BMF championship challenger, Nate Diaz, has dropped a statement on his official Twitter account, where the Stockton native says “peace out to the fight game“.
The 34-year-old fan favorite dropped a third round doctor’s stoppage defeat to fellow welterweight contender Jorge ‘Gamebred’ Masvidal in the main event of UFC 244 last weekend at Madison Square Garden. Diaz, suffered a rather large laceration both on his right eyebrow and right cheek following a first round elbow, and then head kick knockdown from Miami native Masvidal, as he disputed the doctor’s decision to call a halt to proceedings at the beginning of the penultimate round. With the contentious decision, Masvidal was strapped with the ‘Baddest Motherf**ker’ championship.
Despite the highly debated stoppage, both Diaz and Masvidal discussed the possibility of a rematch between the two in the future, with both men seemingly eager to settle the score following the anti-climatic finish. Afterwards at the post-fight press conference, promotion President, Dana White, refused to guarantee a re-run of the clash down the line, telling how he felt the doctor’s decision to call off the bout was correct after some thought.
Taking to Twitter, Diaz posted a picture of himself and older brother, former WEC and Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz smoking a joint, where in the caption, he seemed to turn his back on a potential meeting and hinted at another extended hiatus from active-competition. @NateDiaz209 – “F**k a rematch this s**t was over before it started. Goin’ on out on tour. Peace out fight game“.
Diaz snapped a three year hiatus from the sport this July, returning at 170-pounds in a dominant unanimous decision victory over former WEC and UFC lightweight best, Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis. After the bout, Diaz coined the term ‘Baddest Motherf**ker in the game’ and subsequently issued a call-out to Jorge Masvidal, who had just shattered the UFC’s fastest knockout record via a five second flying-knee finish of the then undefeated, Ben Askren.
It remains to be seen if the latest announcement from the Cesar Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt spells an ultimate end to his fifteen year mixed-martial-arts career, or if the Californian will just spend nother extended period on the sidelines. Diaz was linked with a rubber-match with foe Conor McGregor if he managed a victory against Masvidal in New York, having issued ‘The Notorious’ one his first Octagon defeat during his short-notice triumph at UFC 196, in 2016.
