Report – Colby Covington vs. Jorge Masvidal booked to headline UFC 272 on March 5.

Fierce welterweight rivals and two-time title challenges, Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal will look to settle their longstanding rivalry at UFC 272 on March 5. – with the two reportedly set to headline the pay-per-view event from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Per an initial report from ESPN MMA reporter, Brett Okamoto as per UFC Chief Business Officer, Hunter Campbell this Tuesday evening, a welterweight pairing between Covington and Masvidal is expected to headline the March 5. UFC 272 event. At the time of publication, neither Covington nor Masvidal have yet to put pen to paper on a deal to compete at the event. 

Last featuring in November, outspoken Clovis native, Covington headlined UFC 268 against common-foe, undisputed champion, Kamaru Usman at Madison Square Garden where he suffered a unanimous decision defeat. 

For Masvidal, the Florida favorite has been out of action since April of last year where he himself dropped a second title challenge loss to Usman – in the form of a brutal, one-punch knockout stoppage in the main event of UFC 261 on home soil.

Covington and Masvidal share quite the storied past, with the two formerly training together at the American Top Team base in Coconut Creek, Florida – before Covington’s infamous move from the gym to fellow ‘Sunshine State’ facility, MMA Masters.

In his most recent victory, Covington managed to secure a fifth round TKO win over former welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley at UFC Vegas 17 in September 2020.

For Masvidal, the Floridian initially challenged Usman for undisputed welterweight spoils at UFC 261 back in July 2020 on ‘Fight Island’ on short notice. Suffering a unanimous decision loss, Masvidal saw his three-fight winning run over Nate Diaz, Ben Askren, and Darren Till snapped. 

The Miami knockout artist’s most recent win came against Diaz at UFC 244 in November 2019 where he was minted as the symbolic BMF champion to boot.
