A massive lightweight rematch between former interim UFC lightweight titleholder, Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier and former two-weight world champion, ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor has been booked for UFC 257 on January 23rd. – with a location or venue for the event yet to be determined by the promotion.

Poirier and McGregor initially met back at UFC 178 in September of 2014 – with the latter scoring an opening-round knockout win during the pair’s respective stints at featherweight. Following the matchup, McGregor would continue his rise to the 145-pound throne, while Poirier immediately tested lightweight waters, finding great success.

Hoping to earn another title tilt under the promotion’s banner, Lafayette native, Poirier recently returned to winning ways at UFC Fight Night Vegas 4 in June – taking a unanimous decision win over the then streaking, Dan ‘The Hangman’ Hooker in an incredibly entertaining headliner.

For McGregor, the Dubliner made his last Octagon appearance at UFC 246 in January of this year – taking an eye-catching forty-second knockout win over future Hall of Fame inductee, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone with a head kick followed by a barrage of strikes. News of the exciting potential title eliminator was initially reported by MMA Fighting reporter, Damon Martin

American Top Team staple, Poirier was originally targeted to meet with fellow former interim champion, Tony ‘El Cucuy’ Ferguson at UFC 254 on ‘Fight Island’ on October 24th. – with the promotion and Poirier failing to come to terms on a deal for that fight, as well as a potential matching with former three-time Bellator lightweight best, Michael Chandler.

Prior to his above-noted win over New Zealand ace, Hooker – Poirier dropped a lightweight title unification headliner with Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi last September, in a third-round rear-naked choke defeat. Poirier had earned his interim crown with a second career victory over former featherweight champion, Max Holloway – taking a unanimous decision win over the Hawaiin that March.

Straight Blast Gym staple, McGregor snapped a hiatus dating all the way back to UFC 229 in October of 2018 with his win over Cerrone, where he also dropped a submission defeat to incumbent best, Nurmagomedov in a bad-blooded lightweight title meeting. The 32-year-old striker became the promotion’s first two-weight champion held simultaneously – with a second round knockout win over common-foe, Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in November of 2016 – adding to featherweight title success opposite José Aldo at UFC 194 the December prior.
