Report – Gilbert Burns vs. Neil Magny in the works for UFC 283 on January 21. in Brazil

A welterweight division fight between one-time title challenger, Gilbert Burns is expected to make his Octagon return at UFC 283 on January 21. in a Rio de Janeiro, Brazil homecoming, with a matchup opposite division staple, Neil Magny currently targeted.

Most recently featuring at UFC 273 back in April of this year, Burns suffered a unanimous decision loss against the undefeated, Khamzat Chimaev over the course of three rounds in Jacksonville, Florida. 

Returning to winning ways at UFC Vegas 64 earlier this month, Magny became the most winningest welterweight in Octagon history, registering his twentieth win, and surpassing former champion, Georges St-Pierre with a submission win over Daniel Rodriguez. ESPN MMA reporter, Brett Okamoto was first to report the targeted clash of Burns and Magny.

“Gilbert Burns will get his fight in Rio de Janeiro,” Okamoto tweeted. “Burns vs. Neil Magny is close to being finalized for UFC 282 on Jan. 21, per multiple sources.”

“Spoke to Gilbert Burns, he’s hopeful the Magny fight is inked soon,” Okamoto tweeted. “Working out details now. “To be honest, I was looking to fight Belal Muhammad or someone higher ranked, but this guy called me out,” Gilbert Burns said. “You’re not going to call me out, go to Brazil and beat me.”

20-5 as a professional, once challenging former undisputed welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman for gold, Burns dropped a third round TKO loss, however, has scored impressive wins at 170lbs over Alexey Kunchenko, Gunnar Nelson, Demian Maia, former champion, Tyron Woodley, and most recently, incoming UFC Orlando headliner, Stephen Thompson.

3-1 throughout the last year, Magny had added Rodriguez to a prior success over both Max Griffin, and Geoff Neal, with his sole loss in that period coming against the undefeated surging contender, Shavkat Rakhmonov.
