Fresh from a second-round bludgeoning of two-time title challenger, Dominick ‘The Devastator’ Reyes at UFC 253 in October, former KSW 205-pound best, Blachowicz captured the title vacated by former two-time gold holder, Jon ‘Bones’ Jones at the Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, UAE event. The win came as the Pole’s fourth consecutively.

Closing the same Fight Island event, Adesanya scored his second win of 2020 — successfully handing Brazilian powerhouse, Paulo ‘The Eraser’ Costa his first professional loss via an eventual second-round knockout following a one-sided striking shutout. News of the champion vs. champion clash was first reported by ESPN MMA’s, Brett Okamoto — via UFC president, Dana White.

Rounding off a splendid 2020, Blachowicz added the light heavyweight title to his career résumé. Also adding number-one contender, Reyes to his winning streak, the 37-year-old had previously stopped two-time opponent Corey Anderson in New Mexico in February.

Defeating former Strikeforce middleweight champions, Jacare Souza and Luke Rockhold, the latter via a particularly stunning knockout, Blachowicz had experienced a major turn of fortune deep into his Octagon stint.

Prior to his October win over rival, Costa, Adesanya had featured in the main event of UFC 248 in March as well, taking home a massively criticised unanimous decision win over multiple-time title chaser, Yoel ‘Soldier of God’ Romero, in one of the most forgettable championship matchups in recent memory.

Undefeated in twenty professional mixed martial arts outings, the former kickboxing world champion will remain the undisputed middleweight champion during his siege toward light heavyweight spoils a division higher.
