A heavyweight title rematch between current titleholder, Stipe Miocic, and streaking contender, Francis ‘The Predator’ Ngannou is currently planned for a UFC event in March – with a location and venue for the card yet to be determined by the promotion.
Miocic and Ngannou initially met at UFC 220 in January of 2018 – with the former scoring a record-setting third consecutive successful heavyweight title defence with a one-sided unanimous decision win over Ngannou, marking the Cameroonian’s first promotional defeat.
Rounding off his trilogy with former two-weight world champion, Daniel ‘DC’ Cormier at UFC 252 in August, Miocic scored another successful title knockback with a unanimous decision win in the UFC Apex main event.
In the midst of a four-fight rise, Ngannou last featured at UFC 249 in May – scoring a stunning twenty-second knockout win over the then-undefeated striker, Jairzinho ‘Bigi Boy’ Rozenstruik.
Speaking with TMZ earlier this week, UFC president, Dana White confirmed the organization were planning on pairing Miocic and Ngannou again in March coming.
“That fight (Stipe Miocic vs. Francis Ngannou II) won’t be ready till March,” White explained. “… It could (happen). Yeah, that’s the goal. We’ll see what happens.“
Ohio fan-favourite, Miocic looks to add Ngannou to his gleaming résumé once again – with the 38-year-old securing victories over five former world champions. Scoring his second consecutive win at the above mentioned August event – Miocic rallied opposite Cormier at UFC 241 in August of last year, targeting the body expertly to lodge a fourth-round knockout win – reclaiming his throne.
Along with prior wins over Ngannou and Cormier, Miocic has notched career highlight victories over Fabio Maldonado, Mark Hunt, Andrei Arlovski, Fabrício Werdum, Alistair Overeem, and Junior dos Santos.
Before his May demolition of Rozenstruik – Batié native, Ngannou had bested the likes of common-foe, dos Santos, former division kingpin, Cain Velasquez, and stopped Curtis Blaydes again – all within the opening minute and a half of the premier frame.
