Jiu jitsu is an incredibly complex sport where you use techniques, leverage, timing and body mechanics to manipulate an opponent’s body. Most people who have never trained in any martial arts, specifically Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, go through life completely oblivious of their own limitations. This is especially the case with males. Men want to feel secure knowing they can defend themselves and their loved ones, and most like to think they would know what to do if a dangerous situation were to arise. The reality of it, is that people who are untrained will be relying on physical attributes such as strength and size to protect them. Although physical attributes are a factor, it is not enough when your opponent has trained in Grappling. People who are educated in a martial art such as Jiu Jitsu will have not just more options on what they can attack with, but they will KNOW exactly what to do because they do it multiple times a week, and have felt the intensity of somebody fighting with all of their strength. Even six months of training BJJ could make you significantly more dangerous than the vast majority of people. In some cases, that could be the difference between life and death.
Reduces stress and promotes a calmer state of mind in regular life
We cannot deny that we all possess a primitive instinct to avoid pain, and increase comfort. But there is something to be said about the personal satisfaction that comes from achieving difficult things. Most people enjoy their comfort zones. They want to work their 9-5 jobs and go home at night and relax. But for some, that simply isn’t enough to get through this life and remain satisfied. When you actively pursue difficult things that challenge you and take you out of your comfort zone, you feel more proud of yourself. You also have a better understanding of what you can handle and where your breaking point is, and you have a large endorphin release that results in a significant reduction of stress. All these things can be achieved from a Jiu Jitsu session. Every day life challenges seem to be put back into perspective after you have channeled your energy into something as challenging as Jiu Jitsu. Little things that would normally be annoying don’t seem as important as they were when you had all that build up stress.
Develops better mobility and connection with your body
When you consciously pay attention to the average person as they do most day to day things such as walking, picking up objects and simply navigating through their own personal reality, you may notice some potential problems. Maybe they don’t bend their legs enough when they bend down to pick something up, maybe they look too stiff, maybe they overextend when reaching and risk pulling a muscle. All of this stems from overall lack of form and flexibility. Jiu Jitsu makes you more aware of your own body in space. You develop the ability to move it in ways most people would have trouble with. Things like relying on your strong muscles such as your legs to do the heavy lifting, posting off of one arm or at the very least more awareness when you feel you may be off balance physically. In a Jiu Jitsu situation, you learn to know when you are heavy and where exactly you need to apply pressure for maximum discomfort. Things like an understanding of natural leverage points such as overhooks/underhooks also cannot be overlooked.
Critical thinking and solution oriented mindset
Jiu Jitsu is a very physical sport, but one cannot become well educated in it without the mental aspect of it. Jiu Jitsu is often times compared to a game of chess. The analogy fits well because a game of chess is either won or lost many moves ahead, the same can be said about Jiu Jitsu. When you first begin your journey in Jiu Jitsu, you may be struggling because it is difficult to even attempt a technique because you simply don’t know what to do. A black belt techniques up many moves in advance. Knowing exactly what they intend to do, how they will to do it and knowing exactly how you will react to it. When you are applying pressure on somebody, you are limiting the options that they may have to escape. Therefore you can predict exactly what they will do, and be waiting to launch the next counter attack. A perfect display of human chess, and Jiu Jitsu at its finest.
There are many more reasons why it would be a good idea to join a Jiu Jitsu academy. Obvious ones such as Weight Loss and getting into better shape. But what surprises most people about Jiu Jitsu is the things they weren’t expecting to be impacted, but were.
