UFC 231: Max Holloway vs. Brian Ortega took place on Saturday December 8, 2018 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. The main card aired on pay-per-view while the televised prelims on FS1 and the early prelims on UFC Fight Pass.
In the main event, featherweight champion Max Holloway (19-3 MMA, 15-3 UFC) returned from a year-long layoff as he went to battle against challenger Brian Ortega (14-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC). The fight was a back and forth slugfest. Both fighters were throwing leather connecting with their strikes. At the end of the fourth round Brian struggled to make it to his corner with his left eye almost closed. In between rounds the Dr took a look at Brian’s eye and waived the fight over. Max Holloway defeats Brian Ortega via TKO (doctor’s stoppage) in Round 4 to retain his title.
In the co-main event, the vacant women’s flyweight belt is was on the line as Valentina Shevchenko (15-3 MMA, 4-2 UFC) took on Joanna Jedrzejczyk (14-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC). This was a fight that went the distance. Both fighters had one thing in mind to try to finish this fight fast. Joanna did land some punches and kicks but it was Valentinas wrestling and strength that solidified her win. Valentina Shevchenko defeats Joanna Jedrzejczyk via unanimous decision with scores of 49-46, 49-46, 49-46 as new flyweight champion.
