For all of the people who look at modern professional wrestling and view it as a bunch of small, unintimidating men doing gymnastics, then WWE Champion Bobby Lashley may change your opinion. Lashley, a three-time collegiate national champion at Missouri Valley College, is a seasoned mixed martial arts fighter. Since 2008, Lashley has fought for various MMA promotions including Strikeforce, Titan Fighting Championship, and most recently, Bellator. Now, the heavyweight is looking for a new fight in the octagon or ring. If you are a fan of MMA, you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to wager on combat sports. You can get some very useful information to bet with bet365 before wagering on the next big combat sports event to help you get started.
Crossover fights are all the rage at the moment. Dating back to the fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor, crossover bouts in the ring and octagon have been teased by a number of fighters. Sure, many have done this after seeing the incredible payday Mayweather and McGregor received, but there are some combat sports stars out their seeking a new challenge. Lashley is one such combat sports star. The WWE Champion recently challenged current UFC Heavyweight belt holder Francis Ngannou to an MMA match.
Who is Bobby Lashley?
You may believe Ngannou would walk all over Lashley. Yet, you would be completely wrong to think that. Why? Lashley has fought in MMA since 2008. Although he has made a living in the wrestling ring, thanks to more money being on offer, he has proven himself in the octagon.
Speaking to Joe.co.uk, Lashley said: “I won some titles, but I was never completely 100% dedicated because I always wanted to come back to professional wrestling. He has a title; I have a title – we could do it in the ring or the cage… I don’t mind it. If this is calling him out, this is calling him out.”
The WWE Champion is 15-2-0 in MMA. Unlike some wrestling to MMA fighters such as CM Punk and Dave Bautista, Lashley is an experienced MMA battler with the amateur wrestling credentials to back him up.
Could Lashley defeat Francis Ngannou?
Ngannou won the UFC Heavyweight belt by defeating Stipe Miocic, lauded as the greatest UFC Heavyweight fighter of all-time, at the UFC 260 event. The Cameroonian-born MMA fighter has won five bouts on the bounce by knockout. Four of those knockout wins where in the first round. He is a dangerous fighter in the octagon, but so is Lashley.
Lashley’s last MMA fight was at Bellator 162. It ended in a rear-naked chokehold win against Josh Appelt. Before returning to Impact Wrestling full-time in 2016 and the WWE in 2018, Lashley had won eight fights in a row. His eight-match winning run saw three knockouts, four submissions, and one decision. The professional wrestler/MMA star won all five of his Bellator matches.
Even if Lashley wants to fight Ngannou, he may have to wait. The UFC Heavyweight champion is likely to battle Derrick Lewis in August. It will be Ngannou’s first heavyweight title defence. Jon Jones is also in contention for the belt after moving up to the Heavyweight Division. UFC President Dana White is more likely to book a match between Ngannou and Jones for the bout’s fan and financial appeal.
