When the MMA season ends, you may not know what to do with your spare time. You’ve dedicated countless hours to training and combat. Use your new downtime to focus on yourself, your relationships, and things you’ve wanted to do while still staying healthy and in shape. It’s a great time to let your body and mind recover from a strenuous season.
It can be challenging to fit a vacation into a packed fight schedule. Taking multiple days off in a row may seem impossible during the season, so use the off-season to finally get away with your family or friends for a relaxing vacation. Intense and rigorous training schedules leave limited time for loved ones. Catch up on bonding and relax on a fun trip. Depending on what you like, now is the time to visit a new country, take a cross-country road trip, lay on a beach, or visit an attraction you have always wanted to see. Nourish your mind during this offseason by taking courses at a local community college or university. You could take a course in anything from learning about investing in the stock market to learning new software through programs such as Masterclass or Udemy. They are online and self-paced, which can be a convenient and efficient way to learn a new subject that interests you.
3. New Skills
Having extra time per day could also be a great time to learn a new skill. Maybe you’ve always wanted to try your hand at woodworking. Perhaps you’ve wanted aspired to dabble into photography. Now is a wonderful time to try new things and establish new hobbies. Not only will you have something to occupy your new free time, but you will also experiment and may even find a hobby you will love for the rest of your life. Consider taking a cooking course, learning an instrument, or any other skill. If you are nervous to try out a new skill in front of others, there are plenty of online courses, free videos, and books to teach just about any skill you can think of.
4. Stay Healthy
It’s vital that you still take care of your body during the off-season. If you followed a very strict diet during the season, it is okay to treat yourself to some foods you’ve been missing! Continue to eat healthily and drink plenty of water but know that cheat days are okay too.
You’ll want to continue to work out to stay in shape. However, you can experiment with other methods of working out. You might want to join a recreational soccer league to stay fit and have fun with friends. Take care of your body, keep moving and be sure to stretch daily to stay flexible. While it is a good idea to implement some training that will keep you in shape for MMA fighting, you can branch out to exercises and activities you do not normally get to spend time doing during the season when your focus is on the exercises that will strengthen and help your fighting.
The training season for MMA fighting is intense, rigorous, and very time-consuming. Successful athletes dedicate significant portions of each day to become stronger, faster, and better. You know what to do during the season, but when it comes to the off-season, you may be thrown for a loop with extra free time and no set schedule. Exercise and healthy habits are important during this time but give yourself a break from the strictness you enforced upon yourself during the season. Now is the time to go to new places and learn new things. Keep your mind sharp and your body healthy as they recover from a tough season!
