“The Alpha Female” Catherine Costigan makes her long-awaited return to the cage at KSW 50 this Saturday, Where she faces newcomer Aleksandra Rola in a 115lb fight to open the night.

The word pioneer is used alot, but Costigan can stake a claim to that title. Having started as a National Kickboxing Champion, European  Kickboxing Champion before making the transition to MMA. Catherine had her first Amateur fight in 2009 when MMA was unheard of for many never mind females fighting inside a cage. From here Catherine was able to test her skills on shows like BAMMA, Cage Warriors & Invicta FC in Las Vegas.

This will be the since her Cage Warriors 81 Split decision win over Wendy McKenna back in March 2017, but this time off was not due to injury.

“I took the time off to help my mum bravely fight cancer, but I still run a gym so something had to give” Costigan explained.

“It’s not like I’ve been eating doughnuts just because I haven’t been fighting with the Pankration Kickboxing Academy I’ve been able to stay in great condition”.

Catherine went on to explain that it was only 3 weeks ago that she received the call to fight on Europe largest MMA promotion never mind on a milestone event.

“I got the call 3 weeks ago from Carl Messen owner of Heavy Duty Management. I have known Carl for a few years now & he has always been very good to me, so I knew it was a good deal for him call me.

Is it a 1 fight deal?

“Aren’t all fights a 1 fight deal in reality. I’ve had fights across for a while now and have seen people with several fights on their contracts getting cut after 1 or 2. I will see how this fight plays out and I’m sure Carl & Heavy Duty Management will look after me. we will take it from there”

“I’m still signed to Invicta and will always check in with them before I fight anywhere else, but I’ve been Lucky Shannon Knapp has also been good to me allowing me to take fights away from Invicta”

Both you and Alexandra are making KSW debuts on Saturday is there a game plan? do you know much about her?

“Once we got the call for the fight I was ready to then. It’s not like I was eating doughnuts just because I haven’t been fighting. I run a gym that has lots of kids that look up to me, so I’m always living a healthy lifestyle not just because I like it or because I’m a fighter, but I think if the kids in the gym can see me living a healthy lifestyle and getting my work done, it will rub off on them. As soon as we found out Dermot McGrath my coach was watching any footage he could and putting together a plan”.

“Not only do we plan how to beat my opponent but also look at how they could beat me, this allows me and Dermot to close all avenues that she might think will help her during my fight”

Are you nervous going into the fight?

“No, I’ve been fighting at the highest level for years. I’ve seen how the big show works from every aspect of it from inside the cage to the backstage production. I know what I’m capable of and I’m cutting very little. I fight at atom weight, but this is at strawweight so I should feel good going into the fight”

It has been said by lots of people in the MMA game that Catherine is one of the most genuine & caring people in the fight game. With this being said I asked what gave the most satisfaction. Watching the kids in the gym grow or doing what you love traveling the world fighting?

“That a tough question, Id suppose id have to separate them as their two different aspects of my life. I love MMA it’s my passion I love the fact I’ve been able to travel around the world, I love meeting new people, new experiences & testing myself at the highest level I can”

“But if the kids in the gym are developing as people and I can make a change to their lives for the good that also feels amazing, but as I say these are two different aspects of my life”.
