For Brave champ Al-Selwady, Luan Santiago’s trash talk is a ‘sign of weakness’

Abdul-Kareem Al-Selwady is set for a historical night in his young career, as the Brave world Lightweight champion defends his belt for the first time, in front of his home crowd at Brave 23: Pride and Honor, next Friday, in Amman, Jordan. He will take on Brazilian striker Luan “Miau” Santiago, who is known for his trash talk and hasn’t shied away from saying that he can take out the current titleholder.

For Al-Selwady, however, Luan’s confidence is a front. The champ believes that when fighters use too much trash talk, they are actually showing weakness, which is what he believes is happening to the world title challenger.

“I see that Luan likes to talk a lot, saying that he’s hungry for the championship. But I’m not your average champion. I don’t feel like I did everything I wanted to do. I’m still hungry, hungrier than every other fighter. Even though I’m the champion, I’m hungry to stay as champion. Luan thinks he’s going to finish me, and that actually makes me very happy. I love when my opponents think they’re stronger than me, and are so confident. To me, that’s a weakness they’re showing me”, says Abdul-Kareem.

Coming back to Jordan as a champion is a special experience for Al-Selwady, who last fought in his hometown back at Brave 10, in March of last year. A rising star at the time, he’s keen to maintain his crown in front of his friends, family, and fans.

“It always feels great fighting in my hometown, this is where I started my career. It’s always a great atmosphere, as my friends and family are here too. I’m coming back home to defend my title in front of my people, and this is a very special night for me. First, because I don’t ever want to lose, I always want to win. Friday night will be special because I’ve had the longest fight camp ever. I didn’t stop training from my last fight in November, because I know that, as a champion, there will always be challengers trying to take my title”.

Brave 23: Pride and Honor will be headlined by three title fights. Aside from Al-Selwady x Santiago, “The Jordanian Lion” Jarrah Al-Selawe defends his Welterweight title against Abdoul Abdouraguimov in the main event. The inaugural Super Lightweight world title will also be on the line in a stellar bout between Bahrain’s Eldar Eldarov and Mounir Lazzez, from Tunisia.
