Gilbert Burns Heaps Praises on Conor McGregor’s Underappreciated Grapples

Former UFC two-division champion Conor McGregor suffered four losses during his career as an MMA fighter, all four of which came from submission. But that does not undermine his grappling skills.

According to top Welterweight contender Gilbert Burns, McGregor is one of the best in the game. “He’s good. He’s very good. Skeptics don’t remember, but he swept Diaz in the first bout. McGregor is grossly underrated. People often shout ‘take him down’, but dominating a guy with McGregor’s skills is easier said than done” Burns said on his YouTube channel.

McGregor is Still at the Top of His Game

While McGregor swept Diaz, he was also taken down by him. And we’re not sure whether to count that as moral victory or a feather in the Irishman’s cap. But Burns believes that “Notorious” should never be underestimated inside the ring.

“People often don’t realize that the guys that use their feet a lot develop tremendous power in their hips. Those hips are firm yet docile, and it’s that kind of flexibility and strength that you need for an effective takedown. My point is McGregor’s Jiu-Jitsu skills are at par with the best fighters in the game. Unfortunately, fans underestimate his skills. The way I see it, Connor is a good grappler”, Burns added.

However, we doubt there will be much grappling involved when McGregor returns to the Octagon. He’s up against former interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier at the UFC 257 pay-per-view main event that is scheduled later in January in Abu Dhabi.

Connor McGregor returns to the ring after a two-year hiatus in what’s being projected as the biggest box office draw of the season. Fans on Betpack are impatiently waiting for the action to go live. And the winner of this highly-anticipated bout will likely earn a shot at the 155-pound belt later this year.
