On June 8th, the UFC heads out to Chicago to give MMA fans some of the most anticipated matchups all on one amazing card. There are some shocking fighters that are placed on the Fight Pass and FS1 prelims that usually main card and headline PPV’s and Fight Nights, but as a fan that isn’t what upsets me. I think it’s great that fans get to see bigger names on Fight Pass and FS1 because if the fights are really good, it will entice the casual fight fans to buy the PPV which is what they should have been doing from the start. My issue is, having Phil Brooks(CM Punk) and Mike Jackson opening the main card up as if they are what is going to kick off the evening and set the tone for what is an intense fight card. That’s great that the name Mr. Brooks made a name for himself in the WWE ring, but here in Mixed Martial Arts he is as troublesome as a cloudy day. The fact he took spots away from deserving fighters just because he is a big name is one of the clear cut problems with the organization. I am not saying a fighter shouldn’t live their dream, I always wanted to play defensive tackle for the Oakland Raiders, maybe if I star in a football movie, Mark Davis and John Gruden will give me a starting spot.. Besides this fight that you can probably go grab another beer for, the rest of this line up is absolutely AMAZING!!
The UFC heavyweight division which has been dubbed by Brendan Schaub as “The Land of the dinosaurs” will be putting the undefeated Tai Tuivasa(9-0-0) against the #10 ranked veteran and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski(27-15-0). Since returning to the UFC Arlovski has shed his “glass jaw” image that carried him around while being in the Affliction and the Strikeforce organizations, and he has pulled off some amazing victories since his return. Looking to test that chin will be the hard hitting, Australian wrecking machine who has an impressive undefeated record with all wins coming by finishes. This will be Tuivasa’s biggest challenge to date in the UFC, will he rise to the occasion is the question. This is not a fight you want to get off the couch for, this could either end in a few minutes, or be a 3 round war but either way it should be very exciting fight.
Next up we have a fight that most definitely will be a stand and bang war with Holly Holm welcoming Megan Anderson to the UFC. Fight fans could breathe a sigh of relief that Anderson was able to correctly fill out her Visa information and finally fight inside the Octagon. Holly Holm(11-4-0) has had a fall from grace since being the first woman to defeat Ronda Rousey, only winning 1 out of her last 4 fights. The Jackson/WInk superstar had put on a terrific performance against Chris Cyborg and going the distance with the champion and now looks to derail the hype train that comes with Anderson. Megan Anderson(7-2-0) hasn’t lost a fight since 2015 and was the clear candidate for the shot at the 145lb title but complications arose and her fight with Cyborg had been cancelled. Anderson and Holm are both kickboxers that love to thrown down and get after it, a win for Anderson could mean a shot at the current champ, but getting there through Holly is not an easy task.
The co-main event of the evening should is a fight that the fight fans have been dying to see primarily for one reason…. To see Colby Covington get knocked out unconscious. Colby “Chaos” Convington(10-1-0) has been on a 5 fight win streak with notable wins from Dong Hyun Kim and Damian Maia is slate to take on the former Lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos(28-9-0). Covington is fighter that most fans call cringe worthy, he has taken his persona to a whole new level with his terrible vignettes using “models” who’s only redeeming quality is that they can float without using their hands and feet, and his fake WWE style promo work make Covington more of a joke than an elite athlete. Covington is an exceptional wrestler with a great amount of skills, but the instant he opens his mouth that is all forgotten. Covington and dos Anjos recently did a telephone press conference and it was interesting to say the least. Colby not only took cheap shots at Rafael’s wife and Joe Rogan, but he practically used every Donald Trump quote said during his campaign speeches, which just sounded ridiculous and desperate for attention. Dos Anjos is used to the trash talking from an opponent since he was once slated to fight Conor McGregor, no matter what shots were taken, Rafael stayed cool and calm and tried taking shots of his own. Since heading up to the Welterweight division, dos Anjos has looked incredible and looks to become a fighter on a short list of multiple division champs in the UFC. Dos Anjos doesn’t seem Impressed with Covington’s wrestling at all, and feels he will walk right through Colby like a hot knife through butter.
The main event is a fight that we have seen already, just one year ago Robert Whittaker(19-4-0) defeated Yoel Romero(13-2-0) by a unanimous decision for the interm belt and now they are back at it again. With the extreme health issues Bobby Knuckles has gone through from the Staph infection that was eating his organs, to the chicken pox he got right after, the question of him returning was something asked constantly. It’s amazing that he was able to get himself healthy and with GSP relinquishing his title due to his own health problems, not only is Whittaker back in action, he is the undisputed champion in the Middleweight division. Whittaker is an amazing talent, who has run through some of the best fighters in the Middleweight division, and judging by his statements in the press conference, he feels that when he is healthy there is no fighter in the organization that can take that belt from him. Yoel Romero is coming off an amazing knockout victory over Luke Rockhold, and looks to take the one thing that has eluded him since he came to the UFC. Romero has notable wins over former champ Chris Weidman, Ronaldo Souza and Lyoto Machida but he couldn’t get it done against Whittaker in their first meeting. The amazing part about Romero is the fact that the man is 41 years old and has the strength and speed of a 25 year old. The silver medalist in wrestling has one shot power that could end this fight quick if Whittaker makes a mistake, but Whittaker is smart enough to try and tire out the bigger challenger and eventually make Romero gas out, and then put him away.
UFC 225 is a show that can really kick off the summer of fights for the company and keep its viewers coming back in droves. These are matchups the fans wanted and I expect that arena to be electric. For those fans who want stand up wars and knockouts, this is a card that will give you everything you want and more! You can listen to the press conference below.
