An MMA Fighter’s Diet

It takes a lot of dedication to become an MMA fighter. You will have to put in hours of training, and it requires several rounds of practicing and fighting to be prepared. It can be a very dangerous sport, so you want to make sure you are at your peak performance for it. Many organizations have divisions set up by weight class. This can cause fighters to either add or cut weight, which can be extremely taxing on the body. Especially if it is a drastic amount. Most fighters will need a camp of about eight weeks to slowly make the weight and do it healthily. The last thing a fighter wants to be is malnourished for a fight because of incorrect preparation. Here are a few things you should eat to ensure a healthy, successful camp.

Water

An important component of your health is staying hydrated. When practicing, you need to drink plenty of fluids. This will keep your body in good shape and capable of doing long workouts. You need to be drinking a ration of water that is in-line with your body weight every day. If you drink too much, you will feel bloated and not be able to move as quickly. If you don’t drink enough, you can deplete yourself and not have strong workouts.

Protein

You need protein so that it can fuel your muscles. The amino acids found in protein are what help you get stronger. You can find these in meats, fish, and various other foods. Keeping a detailed track of how much you are intaking if you are trying to make a specific weight. These types of foods will cause you to gain weight, so you will need to monitor your goals daily.

Supplements

Whenever you need extra nutrients that you are unsure of if you are getting in your meals, adding supplements can help ensure you get what you need. This will make sure you know exactly what your intake is.

Timing

When you eat can affect the weight gain or cut you are aiming at. Eating before bed can cause slower digestion of food, meaning you may not lose the weight. You want to space out your meals and eat the proper amounts. This could mean you have five small meals a day instead of the average three that is commonly practiced. As you get closer to a fight, you may have to change up your routine to make sure everything goes according to plan.

Every fight will need to be practiced for differently because of your opponent and weight division. Your meal plan can help you maintain peak physical fitness while you are preparing for your fight.
